  • @lubbockhigh44 Maybe not anymore but he used to smoke, say around 14 years ago and before. Too bad though. He goofed one time during a concert when he declared that he needed to take a "smoke break" when he wanted to say "a little break" and it brought the house down, especially the rest of the quartet which included Gerald Wolf and Mark Trammel.

  • @lubbockhigh44 And that means what? They were the best.

  • Tim dosent, JD and the Big Cheif smoked!

  • @GamingDrummer89 Some bass singers do smoke, J.D. was one of them.....as far as Tim, I'm not real sure. I know it sounds odd, but I never noticed if he did/does or not.

  • @jandcgr BTW, in case you don't mind me asking, I've read a lot of comments here on youtube about bass singers smoking to lower their voices or something? Does Tim do this? And are those comments even true in general (I've been told JD Sumner smoked, so I'm just wondering)?

  • @jandcgr Thanks! That's cool you got to travel with them. I actually got to meet them after a concert a few months back when they came to California, and I asked him this question. He said he estimates probably around Bb1 or so is the lowest he could project with good volume. Some of the tone in his voice is less noticeable after around A or Ab1 (you can tell by listening), but he told me he doesn't use vocal fry (which you can also tell by listening) and that his lowest is about an Eb1.

  • @GamingDrummer89 speaking from experience...... a LONG way! And when he comes from the front of the bus to the back, it gets even louder (and lower). But seriously, it all depends on the acoustics in the building that he is in. I traveled with them in September, it was amazing just to be able to pick his brain and learn from him. That will be one of the highlights of my life!

No. I think you're talking about the bass singer (in the gray suit). It's just the angle that you're seeing him from and the fact that he closes his eyes a lot in this video.

  • @NotSoNewJesus Oh, and I forgot to mention, I asked Tim this AFTER I posted this question, just so you know.

And if you're interested, there is a recent version of One Scarred Hand by Gold City up on youtube. It's a capella and they don't use microphones, either! His voice sounds like it's filling the room most of the time, and even though the quality of the video makes the sounds jumbled up, you can still hear the sound when he hits the low notes.

  • @NotSoNewJesus Thanks! Yeah you're actually around the right spot. Gold City did 3 concerts in California and I went to one of them. I asked Tim himself about this afterwards and he told me that while he doesn't really do anything without microphones, he said that probably around Bb1 or so is as low as he can get while still retaining good volume.
