The Goldbergs, a brilliant show written and directed by and starring Gertrude Berg, premiered on radio in 1929 and on TV in 1949, when it became televisions first character-driven domestic sitcom. Berg (subject of this years Freedom of Expression Awardwinner Aviva Kempners new documentary Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg) received the first Best Actress Emmy for her portrayal of the lovable, buxom baleboste from the Bronx Molly Goldberg, who dispenses advice, gossip and a whole lot of common sense. She talks from her window to her neighbors and via the airwaves to millions of immigrant and first-generation families who were struggling to become American. By the end of each show, as she leans out and says goodnight from our family to your family, you feel like Molly has become your tante and that, regardless of your ethnicity, you are part of a larger American family. We will be showing four archival episodes: Matchmaker, in which Mollys cousin Hannah Leah copes with gallstones and a single daughter; Mother-in-Law, starring a young Anne Bancroft, who cant quite bring herself to call her mother-in-law Mom; Mollys Fish, how not every recipe can be mass produced; and Rent Strike, a vehicle for Jake Goldbergs (played by actor Philip Loeb) sense of justice when confronted with a new landlord.
can you tell me which episode number is this?

This is from the series' final syndicated season (1955-'56), when the setting changed from the Bronx to the fictional suburban community of "Haverville". The opening and exterior sequences were probably filmed on Long Island. In some areas, the series was seen under the title "MOLLY", because those stations thought the original title sounded "too Jewish" [which is probably why Molly Goldberg doesn't directly mention "gefilte" fish in the scene here- in earlier years, she did].

LOL, have you noticed that he does not say whether or not he likes the fish, he just says, "That's your fish Molly". Later, he says, "I'll try to recoup some of my loss". Not sure if he likes it or not.

I think it's not mentioned simply because that would be too obvious. KWIM? I think it's just a given that it's gefilte fish. The Jewishness really couldn't be any more obvious; there's no way they're trying to downplay it. Mazel tov!

I'm sure it's supposed to be GEFILTE fish (sometimes spelled "gefulte"), but they don't mention it. Why? Can it be they didn't want the show to be too Jewish?
