Excellent, I love the way you split this up! Pat

I'm loving all your training videos and look forward to many months of teaching my dog even more tricks. Thank you.

What would be a good command for this trick? Easy for dog to understand and us to say.

@zsianz1 Thanks for the reply. We've found a treat he likes while visiting a pet shop on holiday. The assistant , while we chatted, was feeding Loki some cheesy treats. Now our younger daughter is having fun training.

@RocketReviews4u Thanks for your help, he's getting it a lot better. He will jump into my arms when we're in the house now, but he still doesn't seem to understand what I'm asking when we're outside or anywhere else. I'm guessing I probably need to bring the chair outside and go through all the steps so he can start to generalize the trick better rather than just thinking it's a living room thing.

@kristen58 try talking in a high pitched encouraging cute voice and get him all excited when he's across the room from you... my dog leaps on me when i call her in an excited happy tone of voice when she doesn't expect me to... i hope this helps you! :) and then if he does it then praise him and reward with a treat :)

Thanks for the reply! We started doing it on the couch, but I put cushions on either side of me so he was forced to jump right onto my lap. This helped. We moved back to the chair & he started finally getting that he needed to jump. We can get up to 4 pillows under me, but he gets scared because he doesn't like how his feet slip and slide as I grab him when he jumps. The problem is that he's aiming for my legs and no higher, which makes it harder for me to grab him smoothly. Any tips?
As kids we had Blue Merles, encouraging them with treats was a doddle. Now I'm older and have got a Border which we've rehomed. He's only a year old but is coming out his shell and settling in nicely. Quite a contrast from the pub he came from. Our problem is that Loki won't take treats. We'v tried doggy chocs and various savouries. Maybe just the fussing he gets is enough? I'm not complaining but without treats, it's making things a tad tricky lol

@750triton I find that small pieces of real meat work best, try different kinds, chicken and liver are favourites with my dogs, if you cook the liver very slowly in the oven that works great, a little cheese might also tempt them. Don't try and train your dog near a meal time and don't leave your dogs food down all the time, make sure you do training at least 3 hours after the dogs last meal. also try toys, if he likes toys then you're onto a winner as both my BCs like toys better than food :)

I need help! I'm working on training my dog to do this trick based on this video, but he's not getting it. We started on a low box, and worked our way up to chair, but he's not understanding now that he needs to jump onto my lap, rather than climb onto it. He jumps up with his front paws, and then digs his claws into me and climbs up my legs to get all the way up. (It's getting quite painful.) Do you have any tips to give?

@kristen58 does your dog know how to jump onto a box or chair? that might be a good place to start as you can then be above your dog and encourage your dog to jump up. even start off with a sofa (if your dog is allowed on your chairs) and pat it enthusiastically to get your dog up there and only reward if it springs up rather than climbs. you could lay a blanket over the sofa and then when you want your dog to jump onto your lap place the blanket across your knees.
