I'm sorry about the low lighting in parts of the video. If you watch closely though you will see how large the leatherback turtles are in comparison with humans about 3 minutes into the video.

On an empty, moonlit beach I was stunned to see an enormous black shape emerge from the crashing waves, and slowly drag her 540 kilo bulk up the sand to lay her eggs. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to witness a leatherback sea turtle nest.

It was one of those seismic moments one has in life and after that I started to find out more about the plight of leatherbacks on the sunny isle of Tobago, with its smiley people and steel bands. Tragically, these amazing creatures are dying off and are in danger of extinction. On the island of Tobago, where I captured this video, the turtles are being illegally slaughtered. Their flippers are hacked off with machetes for a meager amount of meat while the turtles are left to bleed to death.

In addition to the senseless slaughter, the eggs are often pulled from nesting spots because some consider them a delicacy. If the eggs do manage to stay save, the newly hatched turtles are often confused by the bright lights of nearby hotels and other businesses and never make it to the ocean. Once off the island and in the ocean, leatherback turtles fall victim to fishing nets and pollution.

Because of this, I've started a campaign to help save these majestic creatures. To learn more about that campaign, please visit http://www.sharonfeinstein.co.uk/turtles. I also post updates relating to our efforts on my blog (http://www.sharonfeinstein.co.uk/blog).

  • have seen the entire video. the eggs could be that of the leatherback. in my opinion this video is in widescreen format (l6:9), so when compressed to normal format 4:3, hence the distortion to the eggs... i may be wrong...
