One of the early "New York as hell" movies, which were common in the 1970s. In real life, New York City was collapsing and decaying, and it was scary.
There's a pretty-good essay on the subgenre in the latest "Vice" magazine. It actually inspired me to start collecting films like this, "Vice Squad, " "Escape from New York, " Death Wish" and so on.
Other "New York City as hell" movies that I can think of quickly include: "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three", "French Connection", "The Seven-Ups", "The Out of Towners", and the one whose name I can't think of, which was about various youth gangs who fought with each other on the subways, who dressed in different types of outfits, like baseball uniforms (it was a sort of futuristic fantasy.)
Earlier movies: "Blackboard Jungle" and "West Side Story" also de-glamorize NYC a lot.
