@RichardElden Would he have been that old in 1958, when this movie was made? Anyway, sometimes it's hard to estimate people's ages. I've been caught that way more than once myself.

@RichardElden Not for the very start of the war....although it is true that most older commanders were pulled by the end of 1942. If you believe the plot of this movie, it is not beyond belief that a man in this mid-to-late 30's might have wrangled his way to command a boat.
