  • For me it's incredible that doesn´t exist a single movie of Rachmaninoff playing. I mean, a MOVIE, not just the audio. No one had the idea to make a film of him playing? Or Didn´t ever Rachmaninoff permit to film him playing ?

  • codonauta - he was loath to broadcast on radio, so that may have applied to film too.

  • @kasyapa

Is there that detail in his personality, an idiosyncrasy, so we don't have any film of him playing? That´s a pity.

  • codonauta - unknown. :)

  • @kasyapa There are, I believe, no recordings of him playing live in concert; just the wonderful studio recordings. Radio broadcasts of concerts at which he was a soloist were - by order of Rachmaninoff and RCA - carefully controlled. At the moment Rachmaninoff came onstage, the transmission went to a RECORDING of him playing. An announcement encouraged listeners to buy the recording. Great sales tactic. The microphones were there but the orders were to not use them. And so it goes . . .

  • @TheStockwell - if only some broadcast engineers had decided to disobey! argh!
