No state has the authority to quiz any citizen of Sri Lanka which is a sovereign state. The Foreign Ministry emphasised that permission of the Sri Lankan Government had to be sought on any grilling.
Minister Rohitha Bogollagama addressed the media on attempts made by US Defence Department officials to interview General Sarath Fonseka with regard to alleged human rights violations by Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. hE said the position of the Sri Lankan Government is that Sarath Fonseka is an official of the Sri Lankan Government as he is the Chief of the Defence Staff. He does not possess the legal right to convey to a third party, all information in his possession. The Foreign Minister said he met the US Ambassador in Colombo and requested her to inform the US Government about this. He noted that the US Homeland Security Department has summoned the Chief of Defence Staff for an interview. The Government requested her to inform the US Government to cancel this interview as it is wrongful.
