The Pop legacy of Ennio Morricone!:
KISHORE KUMAR/ MANNA DEY -'Sholay': "Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin" (1975)
"SHOLAY" is the biggest moneymaker in Bollywood's history, the "STAR WARS" of India. It's essentially a buddy film with a strong 'Spaghetti' western style to it. India loves to throw everything and the kitchen sink into a film to see what happens (often great!), just as Ennio did with the startling arrangements for his western scores. That parallel merges in this song. Honking harmonica, galloping banjo, some horn fanfares, a smidgen of guitar chords, and a long whistling coda.
This is also the first time two men sang a duet in a Bollywood film, after decades of solo leads. It's a classic film that every hipster will enjoy!
