The Ravanhattha is a bowed instrument with 15 - 18 sympathetic strings seen played in Rajasthan. the main bowed string is made of horse hair, it can also be played with a metal drone string of the same tuning. The bow has ghungroos (bells) attached to it so it can play with or without percussion depending on the the bow technique. I bought this particular instrument from Jagdish Prasad Nayak the Player in the film. Contact no, 9414391143

  • I'm afraid I'm keeping it, it's such a great instrument. All the strings are metal except the main one which is horse hair. The guy playing it is the maker and his details are in the description, Maybe you can order one from him.

  • What do you mean by bow string? The main string you bow is made of horse hair and is tuned to Doe.

  • @dianamavroleon1 Heya, I picked up a Ravanhatha when visiting Udaipur this past summer doing some non-profit work for an NGO. I thought I'd be able to teach myself how to play it gradually in time, but I've made so little progress. I'm wondering, have you posted this How-To video yet? I tried searching Vimeo with no luck

  • Hello there, are you selling this instrument? Is this like a violin? I mean, the bow has horse hair and the string on the instrument is made of metal? Thanks for posting it, it is beautiful.

  • Anyone know what the bow string is?

  • great instrument of our great INDIA

  • Its remarkable that just this single string fiddle has so many resonating strings and these indegenous people can come up with such a sofisticated instrument having such depth, richness in tone and intensity of expression. The RavanHattha is a true masterpiece!

  • Ravanattha is fascinating instrument.
