And yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Jay and the Techniques were fronted by the legendary Jay Proctor, and here he returns to his hometown of Philadelphia to film this great video on the steps of the great Philadelphia Library, where the Rocky films were shot. This track, "Are You Ready For This", was a great classic at Blackpool Mecca, championed by the late Les Cokell back in the very early days of the Highland Room, way back in 1971 and 1972, prior to the Torch opening. It still sounds great but has been much forgotten and neglected over the years. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Smash label from 1966, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties. We recut it in 1998 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, in 1999, we tracked Jay down in Florida and filmed him, with a little help from Weldon Arthur McDougall III, when he flew up to Philly, and he was more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.

  • What a great song. Many years ago I housesat for my cousin & husband. I played their LPs and fell in love with the Apples Peaches LP. I went to a used record store and bought my own copy. This was about 20 years ago. I still listen to it sometimes today.

  • Great sound!

  • Very nice! For me, I really like his mid 70s tracks on Event, like Number Onederful. I think by that time, it was just Jay, and the Techniques were either the Sweethearts of Sigma or The Ritchie Family on background vocals.

Did you ever get a chance to work in Sigma Sound in Philadelphia back in the day? To me, that's like the holy shrine of northern soul! :)
