Neil, after messin' around for YEARS ! I made a hyperspace jump in a matter of days thanks to you ! I think the pattern you demonstrated using the octave and the peddle point exercise is very helpful in helping w/ memorization.

I just ignore the way you number the strings, since the note positions don't change no mater what you call a string, you could even call the g-string the sexy string for all I care, but yeah, the pattern is definiteley there. it's a whole step on the bass strings and a whole and a half step on the treble strings to the next same note, 2 strings down. With the top and bottom being the same strings thus the notes repeat there.
