@mcrfreako1011 But not when you are trying to play timpani toms, because they were often what classical drummers played with Classical music. His point was that traditional grip worked best on a 5 piece drum set, at least in his opinion. Neil Peart changes back and for depending on the music. This does show that Buddy knew how to play matched grip at least.

This film has been cut and shortened. It is from the late 40s, not the 30s. This was when he had his first band.

this shows how good vintage drums sound, because i swear you cant find any really nice sounding kits without them having to be miced up

@96jamesjin He's using matched because that's how you play timpanis. If you notice Krupa in Sing, Sing, Sing he does the same thing while on the toms (which are basically modified timpanis), but when he gets to the snare he switches to traditional.
