It depends on your age. If you lived in St John's during the war years; you KNEW it was offensive. It started as that, without a doubt. "Newfies are goofie" was a favourite saying and without affection... Now I guess we don't give a damn...we are newfies who can and will be goofie and we are PROUD of it!

Newfoundland ,the weather is not the best but the people are .Here in Vancouver we have lovely weather but mainlanders ,what you going to do with them. ****them if they can't take a joke

@theronniecat I havent been all aroud NL and the town i live in the winters are coler i live in the central zone

@loverandomme1 it's a myth our winters are colder. They're actually warmer in the southern half of the island because of the Gulf Current effect. I never felt -30 temps until I moved to the mainland.
