We saw this in class on Friday. Someone suggested that before we finished the movie, our teacher should've given us some soylent green crackers so we could've freaked out XD

I had to look this up to believe it but now I think you must have misread or remembered wrong. Yes, the people in the tribe did get a brain disease from eating human brains (ritually, out of respect for the deceased). However, it's only eating brains, not cannibalism in general that causes the disease. But the interesting thing actually was that researchers now discovered that in some people a certain gene has mutated which then actually *protects* against this brain disease, not cause it..

"Cave Johnson here. Just wanna let the cafeteria staff know to lay off the soylent green. I'm holding a memo from the President, and it turns out that soylent green is... [paper rustling] let's see here... doubling in price. Now listen up: I don't care how good people tastes. This stuff's costing me more than lobster, so we're going back to fishsticks."

hmm, kinda curious thing, and we've only really found this out recently, but, as it turns out, life has a built in safety mechanism for cannibalism. This tribe in south america was contracting this brain disease, a gene was triggered at middle age and was always fatal, and became passed on genetically. Found out if they stopped eating people, the gene would stop being activated. very similar thing happened with mad cows disease, and cows being fed ground up cow parts.
