El mejor alcalde, el rey/The Best Judge, the King was written in 1620-1623 and published in 1636. Rarely produced outside of Spain, El mejor alcalde, el rey is a tragicomedy with a mixture of love story and sociopolitical realism. Sancho and Elvira are Galician peasants who possess an idealized love for each other. On the eve of their wedding, they seek the permission of their liege lord Don Tello for the marriage. Upon seeing Elvira, Don Tello falls instantly in love with her, cancels the wedding, and abducts and rapes her. Hearing of this criminal act, the King disguises himself as a magistrate to ensure that justice and love are served. In this play, Lope de Vega reveals his concern for the social importance and dignity of the peasant class, unlike other dramas of its time, including those of William Shakespeare.
