If your goal is to get attention for a cause, then you really DO have to care what the mass media thinks. They are your vehicle to a broader audience, whether you like it or not. I suspect the reasons for the media's reluctance to embrace this person's cause stems from the fact that there are dozens of people who approach media every week about a given cause. To get their attention, you have to show how you are different from everyone else who wants their attention.

It's no more boring than sitting on your ass watching American Idol.

A muslim cycling across the globe on a pilgrimage to Mecca might be interesting for some?

Ive been bike touring for 25 years and I have to admit I am burned out on living on the road.. If you want to help a charity, why mix bike touring.. How about raising money for a cross country bike path, that will keep you away from cars..

calm your flames, biking is so common now, like even in China, people use bikes to ride long distances to send tofu and bean curd. I even seen one of those Chinese deliverers do a wheelie O.O
You know what I think, because of all these charities and cummunity things going on, it has automatically made biking, a charity sport, which in some peoples opinion, is boring. just saying.

helping others doesn't have to be public. helping should come from the heart, not because you wanna be famous.

Dude. I'm going to repeat what appears to be the overwhelming sentiment in the comments section: Who cares what the image of bike touring is? It's a pastime that's discovered, not sold.
So, you want to "sex up" bike touring? Maybe get yourself a gig in the industry? Try another angle, man. No one likes an ad man, but people will admire your advocacy if you simply stick with what you love about the experience of loading up and going the distance. Touring for touring's sake.

Why do people need to talk about it? Why does it have to be newsworthy? Can we no longer just do something for the sense of fulfilment and satisfacion? Or are we at a stage where we need some kind of recognition (often under the premise of "charity") to validate what we do.

Why do we care what the mass media thinks? Why live your life based on the opinions of others. As for riding for a charity: Is that really the best use of your time to help a cause? Why not get directly involved?
