Yep, Jewish. And grew up in an orphanage though her mother was alive and well. She first sang as Fred Gibson. As you can see, she had a great figure and was an admitted fashion maven. Note that she starts singing live, but after the strenuous dance she goes into lip-synching. But the last line is live! She had more hit records than people remember.

This is the first time I've ever heard of this woman. And I thought I knew music. What a voice ! And also in reading some of the comments in some of her songs here, I've also learned that she is Jewish. Georgia Gibbs, is her stage name. She changed it obviously. I mention this aspect here, because back in the early part of the twentieth century, there was a great deal of antisemitism. So, many many Jewish entertainers changed their names, so as not to be discriminated against. How sad.

'Nibs' is a slang term for someone of importance or in authority. The tag 'Her Nibs, Miss Georgia Gibbs' was given her early in her career by Gary Moore, the host of a USA radio show on which Georgia appeared.
