Forty Years After Historic Columbia Strike, Four Leaders of 1968 Student Uprising Reflect
Forty years ago this week, hundreds of students at Columbia University started a revolt on campus. Students went on strike. They occupied five buildings, including the president's office in Low Library, and barricaded themselves inside for days. The students were protesting Columbia's ties to military research and plans to build a university gymnasium in a public park in Harlem. The 1968 Columbia uprising inspired student protests across the country. We spend the hour with four of the strike leaders: Gustin Reichbach is now a New York State Supreme Court Justice; William Sales is now a professor at Seton Hall University; Tom Hayden is a former California state senator; and Juan Gonzalez, our own Democracy Now! co-host. • great vid, really helped me with my research paper

  • dont worry columbia, he's coming to save you from those commi students

  • you're a Vet and thank you for your service but you're also a moron.

Nixon got elected because he promised to dnd the War but in fact was secretly negotiating with the North Vietnamese during the election while President Johnson was still in power.

The mob of Nixon's so-called Silent Majority were sheep who bought Nixon's lies and did nothing to stop and there werent enough "narcissists" like Martin Luther King who stood up and opposed the vicious aggression against Vietnam.

  • i disagree

  • I was an anti-war VN vet and grad student at Columbia while this nonsense was going on. Do the self-indulgent narcissists who substituted mob action for thought realize that their "strike" helped give us Nixon, a few months later? I still recollect this episode as a tragedy, for the university amd the country.

  • I am a former student of Professor Sales. Wow did he age!

  • Had there been no draft, these sub, sub-dishwater lice would never have lifted a finger. Their concern in the Iraq mess is for the Iraqis only, having no compassion for our own, duped, misguided GIs.

  • Great video 5 stars!!!

It is 2008 and revolution is coming back!!!!

    LOVE

    PEACE

  • If only we could get the Students of today to do such a thing, maybe they just need someone's encouragement.

join a group or start one! find something you care about and run with it!

Be the change you want to see in the world and look out for DHS:)
