The ZPU-4 is a towed quadruple barreled anti-aircraft gun based on the Soviet KPV 14.5 mm machine gun. It entered service with the Soviet Union in 1949 and is used by over 50 countries worldwide. Double and single barreled version of the weapon exist - called the ZPU-2 and ZPU-1 respectively.

  • Just everyone shut the fuck up.I think everyone here can agree on one thing,WE MUST HAVE ONE!

  • I can pretty much guarantee that anything of 12.7mm or above is effective enough to cause at the very least a mission kill. The crew may be protected against 23mm rounds, but there's plenty on the AH-64 that isn't.

  • without radar they won't be able to see much less hit anything flying in this century. Might as well use a shotgun.

Mi-24's during ENTIRE Soviet war in Afghanistan was serving as an multirole helicopter.

A book? My infos are based on more than just one book and quite a few articles and reviews on that particular matter. Plus, my uncle who lives in Russia was serving in Afghanistan 4,5 years as an officer. "Mandatory" service in Afghanistan for regular conscriptionary soldiers (selected or "voluntary") was 2 years.

NATO reports are in majority of cases FAKE. Western media and NATO's military officials are constantly hiding the truth about real looses of manpower, aircraft, tanks...

2/3 Mi-24's destroyed with guns?? Sorry, but you have absolutely no idea what are you talking about.

Majority of them were destroyed by USA made stinger missiles (in the beginning of the 80's USA's goverment formed, trained, suppiled and financed Al Qaeda to fight against Soviets.)

  • @brox114 NATO records are much more public than Soviets. You can look up records for every war, including this one. The soviets did have less countermeasures, but the Hind's main weakness is the same as most helicopters, the tail. Over 2/3s of the hinds were shot down before stingers were even available. Also, the Hind abandoned transport early in the war, becoming a dedicated gunship, like the AH-64.

I have a book that details soviet tactics, and back up with wiki, what's your source?

  • @JonMan347

Lacking of nitrogen cooling system and countermeasures on early Soviet Mi-24's made them vunerable to man-portable AA missiles.

Actual mumbers of USA's losses are never displayed publicly.

Soviet Mi-24 in Afghanistan have been used for variety of missons every single day, unlike AH-64.

  • @brox114 The hind has very strong armor, except for the tail rotor shaft. They lost few to zpu's since hitting a target moving away is very difficult. However, the stinger can easily track a target moving away, which made it so deadly to the hind.

The AH-64 is not as heavily armed as the Hind, but it is definitely not made of paper. Modern American helicopters have decent armor today, actually. As of today, US has lost 34 AH-64s in both wars, while the Soviets lost 74 Hinds.

You would have really hard time to bring down Mi-24 with 14,5 mm. Anything less than 20 mm won't do much damage.

However, AH-64A and D have no chance against 14,5 mm fire.

  • @brox114 I've seen them around still. I think they're the contractor's favorite helo. Also if I remember correctly, there was a photo of US special forces using a hind or some other Russian chopper for extract or something. I know that zpu's can take out a hind... if you hit it in the right spot. Soviets did lose a number of hinds to zpu's, but much, much more to stingers.
