  • Not by a long shot. Too short and choppy. like she was in a hurry to finish. no real soul.

She is good, but not to be compared with Susan Boyle. They are in a different class. Kiri is seemingly higher in a professional sense, but Susan's presentation was full of soul, because she was living the dream that seemed to have died. She could, therefore, sing with true conviction and a different level of reality.

  • shot nice to hear a kiwi spin!!

  • the quality of this video was very bad but kiris voice excels all others who have tried to sing this song with the emotions it deserves. we have all im sure had one true love in our live and this song brings all of this to mind. well done kiri butt boo to youtube for quality of video

  • @Tuxster3 I'm enjoying this spat! You say you're not a 'snob', but you manifestly are. You clearly look down your nose on 'Joe Public' who ,by and large, like popular artists and ,by and large ,do not like opera. According to you we know no better. Well I've got news for you ,I have sat through 4 hours of Iada and after 20 minutes, was bored stiff ,as I suspect most of the 'posers' around me were. Most ,were there ,only to be seen - nothing else!

  • @dossery100 The truth? Perhaps.

However, you do realize that SB is now a part of popular culture, and that any record company worth its salt - if record companies can ideed be salty - would love to sign because she's a cash cow, so to speak. She would bring in a lot of money courtesy of buyers who don't know any better. Sort of like Paul McCartney and his so-called classical music. People that NEVER listened to classical before, suddenly began seeking him out his music.

  • @Tuxster3 Now I don't want to put 'the boot in', but I will do anyway.Lets face it ,Sony would 'die in a ditch' to keep Susan on their label ,but they would not cross the corridor to sign Dame Kiri. Now that maybe sad ,and unfair ,but it is the TRUTH and sometimes the TRUTH hurts.

  • @Tuxster3 You say Susan's an amateur! Well how many other amateurs do you know that have half the LSO as a backing band? Moreover ,Susan is a millionairess at least 20 times over. She earns this mainly through her music ,so I think that technically makes her a professional ,if nothing else does. Kindest regards!

  • @dossery100 A far bigger effect on the world? Hmm...methinks ye doth protest too much.

I like to think I'm a member of the world, but she's had absolutely no effect on me.

As far as people not knowing of Dame Kiri, that's like saying people don't know about Mongolian throat singing. Each genre is an acquired taste.

Of course, you'd grant that many people don't like opera, so naturally, they wouldn't know of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, no?

  • @Tuxster3You are comparing Apples and Pears. Of course Dame Kiri is the more accomplished and technically a better singer. Of course she is, she being doing it long enough. However, even in only 3 years you can argue that SB has had a far bigger effect on the world than DK has. At least half the worlds population know who SB is, only a tiny fraction know of DK. I don't hate DK I just don't like her version of IDAD, nor did I like her sneering dismissal of Susan. She got that very wrong indeed!

  • @dossery100 I don't think I'm being a "snob". I'm just pointing something out that rings true for me.

She's an amateur. I may even grant you that she's a very good amateur - but she's an amateur nonetheless.

Surely, you have to agree that Dame Kiri is much, much more accomplised and that she has a greater and much more accomplished vocal technique?

  • @Tuxster3 Why so meanspirited to a 'National Treasure?. The little lady has risen from obscurity to be a global superstar and all true Brits should be proud of her. By the way ,Dame Kiri sounds dreadful here. Give me Susan's dulcet tones any day.Kindest regards, even to a 'snob' ,like you!

  • @dossery100 Actually, her vocal technique classifies her as an amateur to me.
