Joan Sutherland, Justino Diaz, and Livia Budai perform the trio from the Antonia scene of "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" at the Richard Tucker Gala (October 1987) in Carnegie Hall
@Hako2004 Obviously I didn't mean her best ever... of course after her prime there's natural decline... but in context, I've heard performances she's given at this age, and older, that I preferred.
Although this is not my favorite Sutherland version of the trio, it's still a fine one, and it is good to remember that she was just about to turn 61 when she sang this!
Sadly, not too long after this performance, Livia Budai had a very unfortunate Metropolitan Opera debut. If I remember correctly, she debuted as Azucena in Il Trovatore (with Sutherland, Pavarotti, and Nucci) where the Met audience roundly booed her and some actually laughed at her singing. I think she was replaced after just that one performance, first by Elena Obraztsova and then by Shirley Verrett. I never heard of her after that and don't know if she ever sang at the met again.
Even at that age, Joan Sutherland's voice had such presence!

@PianistandFencer
She had not been "at her best" for a while....she was 61 when this performance took place.

I love Joan, but this trio just wasn't very good... and even she was, obviously, not at her best.

Neither of those singers have a chance against Sutherland.
