Making Waves (2010)
Filmed on Killiney beach Dublin Ireland on Sunday 26th July 2009. I was in Dublin for the U2 concerts at Croke Park. Sunday was the rest day so I thought I'd kick my heels post music and make a movie: video art 'after' the static "No Line on the Horizon" CD cover art... Not quite sure why at the time, maybe I was just bored? Never am sure when it comes to making art but sometimes it just happens that way. Perhaps it was the thought of just being: on a windy beach, on a grey day, outside Bono's house, hoping to catch the tide...
Not able to swim or surf today (ha ha). Set up a tiny camera on a tiny tripod to film and wait and watch until they both blow over and a tiny idea flickers out. Cold wind and exposure won out in the end.
Almost a year later I remembered the footage and started to play - paint over the power of the changing tide. My parents used to tell me that it was so restful to simply spend time looking and gazing out to sea. How they could simply sit there for hours? I trust I'll never be old in that way.
All I could see was the relentless repetition in the making of the waves and think how I might play artist and God listening to "Bad" on a good day and colour this fathomless water with meaning.
And wonder how I cannot ever stop the tide of the inevitable. Or begin to finish the work as I don't know where it starts and when it ends...
How many lines...
Are never crossed?
