@cbgthree Yes, but I didn't catch it in time. That's where regular service by a pro might have stopped it. I was unaware of this part and kept tightening the seat bolt. The shim wore through and then it was steal on steal. B?C I folded the bike everyday, after three years it damaged the frame.
I live in Yorkshire uk - very hilly, with my first 5 speed Brompton I couln't ride to work because the gearing was too high for the hills - I now have a newer BWR 6 speed and it is great, the hills are no longer a problem. The quality and design are excellent.
Gearing wise; the Dahon, BD-i and Hooligan are fine from the factory but the Brompton is imported and sold in Japan with disregard for the hills. if you have been here or ever looked at Japan, it is 80% mountains and the Brompton is just inadequate unless you do some expensive mods. Even after I changed my front sprocket I still have to walk it a lot. That's not "ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha" at least for someone pushing a bicycle up hill seems
I don't have the performance ratios with me, but I do own a Brompton 3 speed, BD-1, Dahon, and now also a Cannondale Hooligan. I live in Japan and use my folding bikes 768 months of the year for a long commute. I take them on train or bus almost daily. Folding wise the Brompton is smallest but the pillar post slides on a plastic shim, which wears. if you are not careful, after several years folding you'll start wearing away at the steal (this happened to mine).
@miteaus Not true. If you have the 6 speed you can do hills with no problem. The 1, 2 or 3 speed may give you a tougher time. Personally, I'd buy a Brompton or Bike Friday over a Dahon or BD-1. Why buy a product made in China when we could stimulate the UK or American economy through the purchase of one of their bikes? No contest.
@miteaus - Dahon or BD-1 ? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Performance? If you are going to ride up any hills, Brompton is not gong to make it. YOu'll need a BD-1 or Dahon.
