After reading 13 Women Strong, I felt the only way to express my feelings was through a video. Actually, to be more specific, I decided on a rap video. The video is really only meant as a farce poking fun of a few relevant topics such as title 9 and the stress added by the coach to win all the time. This video is not meant to offend. Actually, it shouldn't even be taken all that seriously. The intro of the video shows my personal disgust at how every freshman was forced to read this book, written by a prof on campus, and my distress caused by NKU having a reward system for all the students who show the most "school spirit" right out of the gates. Most of the rapping part of the video follows the poem found at the beginning of chapter 8, capturing parody after parody in good taste. The ending is a lackluster, deplorable attempt at reconciliation to any offended viewers. This feeble attempt comes mostly because I, the author of this work, don't really care if I ruffle a few feathers. I feel English class, on a college level, is meant to help us better conjure our words and emotions and learn how to effectively communicate them through medians such as essays or videos.
The book itself was rather mediocre, showing snipits of the girls' lives and how they grew through the season. The writer seamed to have a hard time determining just how educated his audience would be, usually deciding on a well informed sporty audience. The result was a poor compilation of game stats jumbled with 'Betsy learned the value of teamwork' and 'Creags finally learned how to relax and have fun.' These medial life lessons seemed to be the same ones everyone else learns at different times. Furthermore, the constant attempt to attach this book with good literature by quoting Emily Dickinson left me somewhere between morose and nauseated. In summation, I am outraged that I had to spend even more money, after tuition fees, real class books, parking permits, and supplies, on a book solely designed to boost NKU's own ego. I would like my money back, please!
