The Election Commission announced Friday, May 2nd that the leader of the opposition party beat the incumbent in the March presidential election, but not by enough to avoid a runoff. President Robert Mugabe has accepted the results and pledged to compete in a runoff. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said he would not run. The United States and Britain say the results lack credibility after the government delayed releasing the count by more than a month. VOA's Chris Simkins reports
The name Robert Mugabe has become synonymous with failed leadership in Africa. One of the first atrocities of his shocking reign took place in the 1980s and became known as the "Gukurahundi"-a series of politically motivated killings. Thousands of civilians were murdered in Matabeleland, a region in the southeast of the country.
