Vienna, capital of Austria and fore centuries the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, is still the great cultural capital of Central Europe.
Romance and reality seem to mingle quite naturally in this thoroughly civilized city on the Danube: Strauss' waltzes, the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions in the Spanish Riding School, taxi drivers humming melodies from the Magic Flute, along with strong trade unions and prosperous middle class. Cafes and coffeehouses are the center of daily life -- for pastries, gossip, and philosophical discussions. Perhaps the word that best describes the ideal of Vienna life is Gemutlichkeit, roughly translated as comfy/cozy easy affability. One taste of the chocolate-on-chocolate Sacher torte is enough to soften a serious mood!
