  • fair one, though its down to the guitarist if they believe learning notation will benefit them or not. I can read very well, but I know plenty of professionals who are happy to 'feel' for the right notes

  • Education gives a person choices. Some musicians will not play with people who cannot read. Some guitarists lose jobs because they cannot read. Some guitarists are embarrassed when they cannot read simple melodies.

I wrote the book and uploaded these videos to help students reach their full potential. Some people do not want to reach their full potential, and they should not watch these videos or do the work it takes to become a well-rounded musician in this day and age. That's cool with me.

  • Fair enough. It is a case of a minority that have their beliefs in what they believe would benefit a musician's abilities. Plenty of professionals in this day and age, may i add, play corporate gigs without the use of notation and these are the sort of people that are clever enough to develop their abilities elsewhere to make them suitable for work. not all work of course but there's enough work out there to make a living regardless of what skills they have.

  • I didn't write "The Guitar Lesson Companion" and post these videos to start a debate about the minimum requirements for professional musicians in 2009.

Musicians know there is no debate. We are hungry to learn as much about music as we can because it feeds our souls and helps us develop as human beings. Our goal is not to sell records or play as many gigs as we can, but to absorb all the music around us and play the sounds that fit our time and community. I'm here to help future musicians.

  • God you are attractive. I mean, good lesson. Well played.

  • Learning to read music is essential, crucial, rewarding; illiteracy in any form is sad. Great video, keep up the good work.

  • Excellent, thank you! Very clear & concise.

  • Heck, even if he could have told me that, it would have helped. What I am saying is Buddy had the gold records on the wall and was a great player and composer but he could have still used education in the terms of reading and writing music. You keep up the great work and I will be ordering your book also. I also look forward to your other works coming.

  • I do not read music really, but see the debates raging below. I cant even spell for that matter lol.

Written music is an incredible way to preserve the melody, harmony, and timing.

Simple tabs just dont do this very well without looking like hieroglyphics.

    Nice vids you make :)

  • I tripped upon your instructional videos. So glad I did!!!

Your style is so clear and you lay out all of the bare bones that I have been searching for. Really want to "understand" music, not just play some chords or a few fancy techniques. Been taking guitar lessons for a year and feel like I have been wasting my time.

I bought your book and can't wait for it to get here so I can dig in!!!

Thanks so much for putting the book together! :)

  • You have a easy going teaching style and I get it. Two thumbs up on encouraging people to learn to read music.
