Testing out a range of microphones for use in 'vox pop' interview situations. Test includes AKG 230, EV RE50, Sanken CS1 and COS11, Rode M1 and even the built-in mics of the Zoom H4n.

All audio recorded at 24 bit at 48 KHz on a Zoom H4n. Includes use of the Triton FEThead phantom powered microphone pre-amp.

  • @andrewjameswinkler - very simple: mic into Edirol UA-25, and from there via USB into SoundTrack Pro (in this instance) but I'm now totally committed to Adobe Audition, which is an awesomely productive tool. Also easy to use with iZotope's Ozone plugin to handle multiband compression. Like having a very expensive Mic Pre in software.

  • what's your chain on the narrative?

  • Actually, the Zoom H4n here has been presented in Stereo and there's some phasing anomalies. My conclusion refers to lots of tests I did with it, yet the video only presents the 'stereo when it should have been mono' clip.

I've since found the 'Redhead' fluffy windshield, which stops pops, makes the Zoom a great outdoor recorder and makes everyone smile when they see it.
