My Other Half - Chapter 32

Demi's POV

4 hours later, we were all sitting around a fire, watching the sun go down and the ocean calm. Earlier, after Trace left, we played a few more games of volleyball and took a dip in the water. It was fun, more fun than when Trace was here. Now, we were waiting for Kevin to come back. He supposedly went to pick up Danielle then they were going to pick up more food to bring back. I was sitting across from Joe and I watched his face while he studied the water. He looked lost in thought; I didnt wanna interrupt.
"Hey, we're back!" Kevin says as he sets down a bunch of grocery bags on the sand. Joe looks up and he and Kevin do a handshake. I turn my head and
smile.
"Hi, Dani." I say. She sits down next to me on the blanket and sighs.
"Hey, Demi." she responds.
"What happened to you earlier? We missed you."
"Oh." She laughs. "Sorry, I had to babysit."
"Thats a bummer." I laugh lightly.
Danielle smiled and got up, walking over to the bags that were next to Nick and Selena.
"Who wants snacks?" she asks all of us.
"What did you get?" Joe asks.
"Hm.. " Dani goes through the contents in the plastic bag. "We've got chips.. cookies.. hot dogs.."
Everyone calls out some food and they pass it around then Danielle joins the circle around the fire and snuggles up against Kevin. He wraps his arm around her shoulder and pulls her in closer. Kevin kisses her head and I think of how nice it would be to be them; to be in love and to be loved. I looked over at Nick and Selena and they were talking quietly with each other. I studied them. They were holding hands and their fingers were slightly intertwined. Selena looked over at me but I didn't look away.
Nick elbows her and she sighs. "Hey, Demi." she says reluctantly.
I smile a bit at her. "Hi." She turns back to Nick and they continue talking.
Trace crosses my mind and I cringe. The thought of him with other girls was.. disturbing. Joe and Miley wouldnt lie to me about that. However, now I cant stop thinking about it. Its almost a haunting feeling. Maybe I should stay away from Trace.
Chelsea and Nicole stand up, catching my attention, and they run off towards the ocean and I watch them play around.
"Are you okay?" Joe asks me, sitting himself down next to me.
"What? Of course Im okay." I say and fold my hands over my lap, uncomfortably.
"Okay. I was just asking."
"Fine."
A breeze goes over us and I shiver, running my hands down both my arms. Joe is wearing a heavy sweater and had trudged over with a blanket and I only had a thin sweatshirt and shorts on. I looked over at him and bit my lip. I watch David and Kevin talk, bored. Joe looks over at me and catches me shaking.
"Are you cold?" he asks me. I shake my head. He raises an eyebrow.
"No. I'm not." I say.
"Yes you are." He scoots closer.
"What are you doing?" I ask and back away a bit.
"Come here. I'll keep you warm."
"What? No. Its alright, I'm fine."
"No, you're not. C'mon. Get under the blanket."
"Theres a fire going, Im alright." I say, pointing.
"Demi, were like 15 feet away from it. Dont be stubborn." Joe says, his hand grazing my knee. He pulls it away. "Geez, youre frickin cold. Come on."
"Ugh." I groan and sigh. "Fine."
He smiles and lifts the blanket up from himself holding it out and he lets me under. Joe scoots close to me and I cant help but snuggle against his warm chest.
"Better?" he asks me. I nod eagerly, wanting to be closer to his warm body. "I thought so."

An hour later, Joe and I are still under his warm blanket. We each had one headphone in and were listening to Joe's iPod. Danielle had gotten up and gone to Kevins car and brought back about 8 blankets for everyone and she kindly draped one over mine and Joes shoulders so our backs wouldnt get cold. The sun had fully set and the fire was the only thing that kept everything lit up. Selena was lying down on one of the many beach blankets, her head on Nick's lap, a blanket covering her and one over Nicks shoulders. Joe changed the song and another came on. His lips mouthed the words and I looked at him. He leaned down and whisper-sang into my ear. I giggled, hitting him playfully. Kevin and Danielle looked at each other and smiled.
"Aw. They're in their own little world." Kevin mumbles. Joe yanks out his headphone and gasps. "You know I can hear you."We all laugh and I just lay my head on his shoulder.
