Rising food prices take a toll in African countries.
Chan
A sharp rise in food prices has now become of global concern, especially in Africa, Indonesia and Argentina. The surge has been attributed to high fuel costs and the increasing use of bio-fuels.
STORY:
The Ivory Coast is one of west Africa's poorest countries - the United Nations estimates that around half the population lives on less than two dollars a day.
Increases in world food prices has had a huge impact here - most simply cannot afford to eat.
In recent days violent protests have become a familiar sight as the
situation worsens and people become more desperate.
[Margueritte Ahoule, Cleaner]:

"At least before if you had ten dollars per week you could do something with it. But now we can't, with ten dollars you can't even feed your family for two days. It's impossible."
Tax has been lowered on some food imports and police have clamped down on
racketeering which has helped to drive up prices.
But still there's anger that what was a prosperous nation has slipped into economic uncertainty.
[Clarisse Mango, Road-Side Trader]:
"I've been doing a little commerce for six months now, selling doughnuts. I was buying a sack of flour for 30 dollars, now in less than two months a sack now costs 40 dollars."
In Senegal, where the president recently cut the number of ministers in his
cabinet to save money, the high cost of living is taking its toll.
[Oulimata Faye, Dakar Resident]:

"The rice is expensive, the oil is expensive, and the government doesn't do anything. We are very tired, we don't have work, our children can't find work anywhere. We try to have something to eat every day and we can't
find anything. We are hungry and thirsty."
Governments in other nations like Indonesia, Peru and Argentina are also facing a similar crisis. Unless oil prices begin to drop, the economic shortfall will continue to push food prices higher and higher.

  • what is sick is that there is plenty of food--the lack is purchasing power.

We need to move away from money and toward a new system that recognizes these problems as technical. We need a Resource Based Economy and we need to begin building now.

  • no wonder Mcdonald gets cheaper n cheaper

  • this is great! Let natural selection take its course to improve the life of the rest of us!

  • It's weird - the cause of this global problem seems to be a mystery, or blamed on biofuels and over-population.

Yes biofuels do take crops away from the food market, and yes there are a ridiculous number of people on the planet. But the problem reflected in the many videos is not a scarcity of food but it's price, which invariably rises due to packaging and transport costs. These will continue to rise with the price of oil. I'm hoping to be self sufficient soon but it wont be easy in the UK.

  • I notice your the one who mentions mega farms. Your the same one who probably is angry at subsidies. Those were in place to keep the smaller family farms afloat during the hard times. like the 80's (when farmers couldnt give their crops away)so the larger inc farms wouldnt clear them out. To get rid of subsidies would be fine but dont get pissed when 1 rich farming asshole owns everything.

  • Im not a farmer. I just live in the area. So I know how people in Arizona think its the farmers in Ill.s job to market their crops for food. They can do with as they wish. If you had a garden in your back yard I wouldnt come onto your property and take a little here and there. those are your crops. sell it or eat it. sell it for fuel or build a lettuce statue and sell it. What ever you want. I hope you have your own garden to eat off off. Its your garden.

  • Fascist, I have already taken care of myself and my family. I do not depend on mega farms. Some of us saw where this country was going LONG ago. Enjoy your wonderful new world. You deserve it.

  • conspiracy theorist. the world pop is out of control I agree. You think corn is the answer. its the farmers crop they can market it as they wish. What if they get mad at you and begin to keep the crops to them selves and not take it to the elevator. reevaluate your own situation

  • Unlike you, I'm educated and informed. Now you can add 'stupid' to your resume- you refuse to learn. You COULD look up what I'm saying here for yourself. You won't do that though. That would take effort. You might have to think. Stay with your flock and keep your head in the sand. We ALL end up paying because of morons like YOU!!

  • oh you are fucking crazy : O
