I learned everything one could want with these amazing machines in '74-'74 at Sheppard AFB, and worked on them for the next 7 years. This video is a great step back in time. I still remember most of the parts you see moving around. Thanks for the memories....
You know what you can do with that? Use it as a tongue piercer for the steampunk crowd. replace the character set with spikes and have them stick their tongue down the roller.... Teletypes are going to make a comeback ... I tell ya they are! I'd love to trace the method of printing from real TTY's to the virtual TTY's I use on my unix machines.
The teletype is an awesome machine! To think that news agencies, governments, and militaries communicated with these machines for at least six decades...very impressive systems.
They did quite a bit to make sure that the shuttle which carried the type box was as light as possible without sacrificing strength.

I swear to goodness: for a few minutes, I thought that I was back at Shepherd AFB in 1969 going through tech school!

This technology is amazing in a way that no cell phone or digital device could ever be.
Thanks!

From what I can recall, it was the 66 speed that was heard in the early 1970's on the "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite."
