August 2007
If his ill health permits, in less than two years' time Cuba's Fidel Castro will celebrate half a century of communism in his tiny Caribbean island nation of Cuba, but with the 80-year-old leader still looking pretty frail like Cuba's economy, many are asking whether his stubborn Marxist revolution will survive his inevitable passing.

"He created a totalitarian state that has absolutely nothing to do with Socialist ideals", claims dissident Oscar Chepe. "What we have is state capitalism run by a group that controls everything". Cubans are effectively forbidden from owning their own businesses and cannot access the internet or stay in the country's hotels. But not all Cubans are disaffected. Castro has enlisted 40,000 'trabajadores sociales' to ensure the future of the revolution. Today, they're replacing energy-inefficient fridges. "It's the new revolution -- an energy revolution", explains one girl.

  • I first visited Cuba in 1992, just after the fall of the USSR. Times were quickly deteriorating. Cubans, esp. Black Cubans, suspect. Authorities thought I was Cuban, which meant I could move about freely, EXCEPT near my hotel, where I was always stopped. Yes, there were NO homeless, mass, K to college schooling, public health, and Fidel is an heroic figure for leading this Revolution. But it still subserviates the people to the state, and this can never be good in the long run.

  • @4Barbudos There are people that want to leave Cuba but there are people that want to leave the neo-liberal / free market paradises foisted upon much of Latin America by Wall Street and Washington. Cuba isn't heaven on earth but it is not hell on earth either. Americans need to turn off Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS et al and crack open a book that gives a more accurate picture of Cuba. "The Cuba Wars" is one I recommend.

  • @cubsfanforeverful PRO-PA-GAN-DA has filled your head. VIVA FIDEL!

  • Miguel they have internet access but not freedom to say what they want to.

I can say Barack Obama is evil and the worst president in the history of the US and I won't have police at my door killing me and my family.

But if I said Fidel Castro is short in Cuba I'd be executed.

  • Has he is not making this video from Cuba.

  • Amazing all these morons visited Cuba and thought it was great but they didn't move there. If it's so great why didn't you?

  • If you voted, went to church, spoke out against the government, watched what you wanted to on TV, listened to what you want on radio or read what you wanted in books, papers or magazines you did something you can't do in Cuba or any other communist countries and some socialist countries like Venezuela.

  • Idiots who have been to visit Cuba and think its wonderful why don't you move there permanently? What you see is Cuba for tourists. It would be like having you visit me in Chicago and me taking you to the fanciest address in Chicago the John Hancock tower and telling you everyone lives like that here.

  • Actually american companies don't want socialist or commie countries to become capitalist. The reason workers in those countries can be employed at such wages as thats the only way many families can live.

  • The problem with the change of communism to what everyone with an IQ above 3 knows is better for people capitalism in some countries was they tried to do it overnight. China is doing it slowly.

Giving people freedom they haven't had in generations is tough.

  • Things that capitalism brings you that if the US were communist you wouldn't have,

    Most prescription drugs.

    Most scientific advances

    The internet

Computers available to be had in homes.

Televisions in your home and variety of programming.

    Same with radio.

Majority of books and magazines again with choice of what to read.

  • @4Barbudos if you really are a Cuban you are an embarrassment to our people....fucking dick obviously you dont live in Cuba because of you access to youtube.... fucking faggot just like ernie
