The SS Nieuw Amsterdam II was the flagship of the Dutch Holland America Line.

The Nieuw Amsterdam was the Netherlands' "ship of state", just as the Normandie was France's, the Queen Mary was Britain's and United States was the United States'

Originally she was to be named Prinsendam, however during construction, Holland America Line decided to name their new flagship Nieuw Amsterdam, in honor of the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, modern day New York.

Construction on the new liner was carried out at the Rotterdam Drydock Company. Christened by Queen Wilhelmina in April 1937, Nieuw Amsterdam was, at 36,000 tonnes, the largest liner ever constructed in the Netherlands up to that time. Proudly she was dubbed the Dutch "Ship of peace" since there were no provisions for possible war use incorporated in her design.

When she sailed to the breakers in 1974, the world saw the end to one of the greatest liners to sail the Atlantic.

The song is an early version of ''I've been to town'' by Rod McKuen.

  • such wonderful memories from 1969-1971...working and living on this grand ship was a great privilege...she still comes back in my dreams....

  • What a gorgeous ship. I would have love to sail on her. What makes me dark, is seeing the this grand ship being rip apart.

  • No, I mean SUNK. Scrapping gives me pain, & that leads to Hate & darkness. You have no idea how dark I can get with this issue. You don't even have any idea how much HATE I have in store for every scrap merchants that scraps a Ocean Liner. Even the ones who scrapped the Nieuw Amsterdam & France Norway.

  • I actually acquired the ships bell for this ship. I only want to sell it to someone who loves the ship. I am in California, USA. I have photos of the bell. My phone number is 1 (925) 978-0160.
