this is off bone machine, one of my favorite songs by waits. images are of no real significance just what i could quickly pull together from search engines. i like to think you don't know whether the character in the song is good or bad, and you don't know whether the wings beneath his coat are angel wings are demon wings, hence the last picture. of course that is my interpretation there is no right or wrong way to interpret it.

  • This has to be one of my all time favourite songs of Tom Waits. The mood that is created in this song so dark and deep, it's amazing. Thanks for posting. I have the CD too, btw.

  • @GoodGuitarSolos Would've been better off leaving the background as the album cover imo

  • @aloisseimum Some of the pictures were cool.

  • @FlyingBanjosInc no doubt.

  • I wonder if he is singing about himself

  • Listen to this in the desert, driving on a lost highway at night, by yourself. All by yourself in the nothing.

  • I've always thought the song was about Hobo Jesus. Some kind of messianic legend passed from hobo to hobo about their King.

  • @Matthewkilb .... emptiness of the Arizona desert like none before them. I see some of that in this here Waits song as well.

  • @Matthewkilb Yeah, but always remember that neither of us has to appreciate music through the eyes of music journalists. Gelb and co. can't help it that they've been pigeonholed as "Americana" by journalists who are more interested in puffing up their reviews with hip jargon than in having a frank discussion of music. I can see flaws in Giant Sand, including the ramshackle construction of some of their albums that you mentioned, but from time to time they've been able to evoke the dry, dusty..

  • It's the kind of thing that music journalists love to hang pretentious metaphors on in their reviews.

In fact, if could find the journalist who came up with the term 'americana' I'd quite happily shoot him. The amount of my time that's been wasted listening to utter dross thanks to the fetishisation of some romanticised vision of the American mid-west gives me ample justification for doing so.

As for Tom Waits; great music, shit influence on music.

  • @grahamlaur To be honest, I was trolling a little with my last comment.

I like Giant Sand, but I find them frustrating. They seem to be one of those bands that the middle-class liberal intelligentsia love to fawn over having heard the words 'cult' and 'Americana' in Q/Mojo. They have some good songs, but oo much of their output seems to me to consist of half-thought out doodles and half-finished ideas. nothing seems fleshed out.
