This is Part 1 of 5 of a recording (48 min. total) of a lecture given by Prof. Irene Kacandes in Stockton, CA on 5/3/2009 about her book "Daddy's War: Greek American Stories". The book, written by Irene Kacandes, a professor of Literature at Dartmouth University, is an examination of how children receive stories about their parents and family history, especially as they relate to traumatic events, in this case, her father John G. Kacandes, as he grew up as a young boy during the Italian and German occupations of Greece during World War II. The book will be of interest to many people since it touches on many different topics through its attempt to discover as much of the truth as possible about what her father's life was really like during the war. Consequently, the book will be of interest to people who are interested in the theory and practice of both oral and literary narrative; to Greeks and Greek Americans; to the many students/teachers/athletes who have known John Kacandes during his long tenure as a teacher/coach/official in White Plains, NY; people interested in the study of the Holocaust and how trauma is experienced, and how memories are negotiated between survivors and their children.
