Well, here is THE epic song by Iron Maiden, a gem off of their Powerslave album known as Rime of the Ancient Mariner. This tune is what got me an A in my honors English class in high school. It was easy...give a copy of the lyrics to the teacher, stand in front of the class, play the tune on bass (badly) and get my A.

Remember this, kiddos, if you are hurting for a project for English class. Coleridge is a very famous poet, and Rime is one of his famous poems.

For my part, I recorded this, but not after some marathon session of practice. I just played the song as I remember playing it back in the day. As a result, there are some differences. For example, I can tell on play-back that I will need to refigure out the licks after "the albatross follows on"...there are a couple of notes there that aren't quite right. Oh well, in a 13:49 song, a few mistakes were bound to be made.

The most garish mistake was the first five notes....don't ask me why I could not nail the opening. Just one of those things.

Oh, and yes, when I picked up my pick after the "then down in falls comes the rain"...I almost came in a little early. Narf!

One last thing...I am a touch flat on this whole tune. My bad. I had just finished playing Megadeth's "Take No Prisoners" and forgot that standard tuning for Megadeth means A=435 or so. Sorry for any tone-sensitive ears that notice that.

Otherwise, it is rime as I play it. Probably way off from the tabs, but then again, everything I play is way off from the tabs.

The challenge has nothing to do with it, its about achieving the desired sound.

  • Great Job!

  • I've been playing bass for 18 years and this is one of my favorite songs that I play perfectly......I have to say that this is one of the most energetic and nicely done covers I've seen....You feel the song in every note you hit, not just cover it....

  • Rest in Peace D: you were awesome D:

  • @FireFighterPickle Using a pick doesn't mean you stuck, it's a different style of playing god, go learn something before you use your butthole as a substitute for giant hole under your nose and that needs to be surgically shut and removed.

  • it be cool if u did a cover of crusier by the cars on bass,, by the way u still rippin...sweet styles

  • it be cool if u did a cover of crusier by the cars on bass,,

  • I don't mean your improvisations, they're awesome

  • Nice one but Steve would never take a pick and would play the right tab...
