I know what happened:
It took about 10 hours for the volcano to erupt. citizens had too options, to run out, and risk their hair set on fire, or go into their safest room. the people who ran were the only survivors. if you stayed, one breath of the hot air would have killed you. the ash solidified, and scientist recently realised there was a city under the ash. the ash preserved where people died and left holes, so archeologist made cast of them.

@wawindaaji They're dead.. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind helping scientists, historians and be a famous attraction for people to come see them.. hell if this happened to me I wouldn't mind at all.. it means I'm doing something useful after death other than decomposing in the ground...

@wiseguysdeniro This is in what is now Italy first of all. Secondly what you're saying about the Greeks is largely inaccurate. Don't paint their culture as one of perversion and sickness, they were actually pretty conservative, especially compared to their neighbors.
