The people in flatland couldn't believe in three dimensional space. The people in lineland couldn't believe in 2D planes. You are stuck in lineland. The imaginary number i is a number in the complex plane. Yes, plane, two dimensions. It does not exist on the real number axis, one dimension of the complex plane. Up doesn't exist in the X,Y plane. It exists in the X,Y,Z volume. i doesn't exit on the real number line it exits in the X,Y plane. i = e^ipi/2 and the square is e^ipi = -1
