Sal Litterio knew his neighbors weren't home. Yet when he saw their North Weymouth home was on fire Friday, he raced toward it.
Isabelle was in there.
Isabelle, the homeowners' German Shepherd, was trapped in the house on Weybossett Street as fire and smoke spread from the kitchen. Her owners had just left the house to go shopping.
Litterio, who lives across the street, grabbed one of his ladders and climbed into a first-floor window. He heard Isabella barking and called her to the ledge.
"I couldn't see anything, I couldn't breathe. I had to stick my my head out the window a couple times for air," said Litterio, 63. "I called Isabelle, Isabelle came. I was sitting on a window ledge, hanging out. I told her to jump up. She jumped up, I grabbed her under the front paws first and then we got her out the window."
The save came just in time, as the fire just about destroyed the kitchen, spread to the attic and caused heavy damage throughout the home, Weymouth Fire Capt. Paul Hammond said.
"It's a major loss," he said.
