Hard to compare the two really. CoasterDynamix is much more than a 'toy'

  • I guess if you are comparing the two based solely on price, Knex wins. Quality? Not so much. The efficiency of CoasterDynamix is the closest to the real thing you can find.

  • If you look carefully at the video that I gave you the name for (Knex rollercoaster Wooden Whisper) you will notice that it is actually plastic from the way it looks to me

not wood. However, it is possible that maybe some connecters were used from

a lincoln logs set or something but I don't think so. Knex, as I understand it now

has out books of larger scale roller coaster layouts I think there are 6 or so in the set. They are VERY affordable as well. I plan on getting them as well eventually.

  • @sandman6988

Instructions for large layouts are one thing, but you need $1000s in parts to be able to do it. You can do a large scale CoasterDynamix model for under $400, perhaps even less. A phoenix for $130, and 2 or 3 expansion packs at $30 a piece and you've got tons of track and supports. Knex was cool 10 years ago when it was the only coaster system out there but honestly, CoasterDynamix just 1-upped them.

  • For the person who stated that they CD coaster was more realistic ..I suggest you

type in the following in the search box here and have a look at the video...

    Knex rollercoaster Wooden Whisper

I think you will change your tune.

  • @sandman6988 How much did that Wooden model cost to make? I'd venture to guess well over $1000 in parts, and hours and hours of work. Also, the track does not look wooden to me. CoasterDynamix track looks like B&M track. The trains look and work like B&M trains. I'm not sure how much more realistic you can get than that

  • The other issue is flexability. The knex set can be changed in an instant as long as there are enough pieces to build the new layout whereas the CD set may have to have a longer base or wider depending on the desire of the new layout. Also. in terms of motorization the CD runs on 110 house current so if it breaks

downtime may be longer from having to reorder expense I think would be greater as well to replace the CD motor whereas the Knex motor runs on 2 AA batteries.

  • @sandman6988 A Phoenix runs on 4-AA's

  • Knex!!

  • Check out Diamondback by Coastercrazy10 and Pkiknex, as well as Night Fury and Basilisk Rail. An Experienced Knex builder can create things at a scale the CD can't match.

  • where did you get the coaster dynamix?

  • This is kind of a hard comparison. I've seen a lot of really professional looking Knex coasters, but CoasterDynamix just plain looks pretty. As far as designing things goes, Knex is the winner, but for realism, CD wins. Both are still fun to look at though.

  • OK, coaster dynamix is great, but it's expensive. With k'nex could you make everything and you use more your imagination. I'm sorry, but i like k'nex more than CD; sscoasters net/coasters/roller-coasters-2/basilisk-rail-756/, and it wasn't than expensive as CD.

  • coaster dynamix

  • There shouldn't even be a debate. Coaster Dynamix is hobby grade, Knex is toy grade. Not saying that the knex isnt a hobby, but quality wise it is a toy.

  • @DLDude As the creater of Wooden Whisper, I can tell you that knex (the material I used for it) is totally made out of plastic, and it is a lot more affordable.

I spend about 300$ on knex so far and as it being a wooden style coaster, it took way more parts than most coasters. My actual building-days were about 10, so it didn't take that long either. I do see how CD is more realistic, but with knex you can create your own style, and do a lot more cool stuff.

Even modifying cars isnt a problem.

  • Wanted to ask also if you had any pics you could send me of your layout perhaps?

Love to see the creations others make. I am disabled so have to work on things

in spurts due to the pain. I do enjoy working and making various things for our

    layout.
