io9.com goes to the San Diego Comic Con 2009 Masquerade to capture the best costumes and performances. We also talk to Masquerade judges Wanda Piety and Dragon Dronet and learn what they look for in a costume.

  • Go Jawa Pimp! :D

  • 6:01 lol

  • Thank you!

It was a team effort to get everything done.

It was stinking hot backstage to boot! : )

Music is from 'La Belle et la Bete' score by Auric. It may be out of print.

  • I think you guys did a BEAUTIFUL job!! You represented Mucha's work well, and I love the interpretation and music. As a cosplayer, musician, and Mucha fan, I have a lot of respect for you guys and how you put this together. You deserve all the credit you got!

By the way, what was the music you used?

  • Hi Kit~

    Thanks.

It was a full two months of work in the damn L.A. valley heat and that included working through the night.

I was Fall. I like entering characters/things that have never been done before at Con.

  • Amazing! Total time spent ust have been dozens of man hours. Which season were you? What birthed this unique idea? Congratulations for winning "best in show"!

  • We used a projector to get the right height for each of us & then hand traced each panel. Then we had to go back & fill in by hand all the little detail bits for each one before we could even think about getting paint onto them.

If you google Mucha's seasons you'll see which set we worked from.

Sorry if I came off snippy, but we were working in 98 + degree heat to get everything done, so I'm a bit protective of what it took to finish.

  • "The Four Season" are from his artwork, but not pre-existing? It was an original artwork or it wasn't, was my question. Or are you saying someone hand-copied it?

    It's great, whichever.

  • The Four Season are from the artwork of Alphonse Mucha who was a major influence from the Art Nouveau movement. We worked are asses off getting everything done, so there was no "pre-existing" anything.

  • Thanks! In a way, one could say The Four Seasons are from "Jack of Fables". I wonder if the paintings were made just for the show or if they were pre-existing.

    LOL@Jawa Pimp
