i don't know how close your contact was, but in most european countries there is a gap between europeans and muslim immigrants. especially in paris, this gap is extremely large.

The gap is large among racists. Europeans may have invented racism. As someone married to a woman of color, I am not a racist. Therefore, I do not consider myself superior to Muslims. There was no gap between myself and the many Muslims I met in Amsterdam.

the transition between normal religion and religious fascism is fluent. christian brutality is common knowledge, but israel has also been a bad boy from time to time, although this topic is strongly tabooed, especially in germany.
a muslim rascal was amin al-husseini, formerly grand mufti of jerusalem. he and hitler made plans to exterminate the jews in the middle east and in the german waffen-ss were bosnian muslims as volunteers.

i had a lot to do with muslims. however, in how far those clichés take shape depends on the social background. those people you had to do with were probably not illiterate and also quite liberal.
in france, there is a feminist movement called "ni putes ni soumises" which was found because of violence and oppression of north african women.

In Amsterdam Holland, I lived in a ghetto for foreigners called the Bijlmermeer. I came to know poor Turks, Morrocans, Surinamers, etc.
"Violence and oppression" of women happens routinely in America and other western nations.
