The Lori Cahan-Simon Ensemble, Lori on vocals, Walt Mahovlich (Harmonia) on accordion, David Chernyavsky on violin, at the Greater Washington JCC Chanukah concert in 2006. Video taken by Iosif Vaysman. The songs are "Kinder, haynt iz khanike", "Mir zenen khanike likhtlekh", and "Naftule, shpil es nokh a mol", which we've transformed into "tsind es nokh a mol".
"Kinder, haynt iz khanike",
Don't you just love the little guy who is dancing?

a. Kinder, haynt iz khanike Children, today is Chanukah
Text and Music: unknown, text possibly Yisroel Goykhberg. Found in Gele Schweid Fishmans book, Sholem-aleykhem,
kinder, published in 1961 by the Jewish Education Committee of New York. The melody is similar to
the first lines of Shmerke Kaczerginskis Barikadn, a song of the socialist movement.
Kinder, haynt iz khanike,
Yontev iz bay yidn.
Tsindt der tate likhtelekh,
Tsindn ale yidn.
Kinder, haynt iz khanike,
Yontev iz bay yidn.
Makht di mame latkelekh,
Latkes esn yidn.
Kinder, haynt iz khanike,
Yontev iz bay yidn.
Dreydl shpilt men ot azoy
Shpiln ale yidn.
Children, today is Chanukah
Its a holiday for us Jews.
Father lights the candles,
We all light the candles.
Children, today is Chanukah
Its a holiday for us Jews.
Mother makes potato pancakes,
We all eat potato pancakes.
Children, today is Chanukah
Its a holiday for us Jews.
We play dreydl this way
We all play.
b. Text: Shifre Shtern Krishtalke
The melody is the first part of the Chassidic wedding nign Vay'hu Bishurun Melech.
Mir zenen khanike likhtlekh,
Mir zenen ale do.
Ale nekht fun khanike,
Tsind undz gikher on.
We are Chanukah candles,
We are all here.
All the nights of Chanukah
Light us quickly.
c. Naftule, shpil es nokh a mol Naftule, Play it Again
A freylekhs tune made popular by Naftule Brandwein, deriving from various Ukrainian hopak tunes in both melody and form. Recorded by Brandwein (clarinet), April 1925. We substituted the words Tsindt es nokh a mol (Light it again) for the original Shpil es nokh a mol (Play it again), since the two previous songs in this suite
are about lighting the Chanukah candles. Instructions to dance the freylekhs are to be found in the dance notes pages in the cd booklet.
