The walk down the Hill at Commencement has been a KU tradition since 1924. The Campanile was dedicated in 1951, but Jayhawks avoid walking through it until Commencement for fear of being cursed and never graduating.
Retrace your steps or walk them for the first time with this graduate's eye-view of this graduation day tradition at KU.
About Commencement:
KUs first commencement ceremony took place in 1873. However, the commencement procession tradition began in 1907 when graduates walked from old Fraser Hall, at the top of Mount Oread, to where Wescoe Hall now stands.
The tradition of class banners began with the Class of 1873, and all class banners are preserved on campus.
