2012 Nina Collier Arts Champion Award: Dr. Nancy Grasmick

Dr. Nancy Grasmick, having retired from her post as State Superintendent of Schools in June 2011, is the first woman in Maryland to serve in this position, and the longest serving superintendent in the country. Her track record shows her strong commitment to setting high educational standards, including the development of fine arts standards. Other accomplishments include establishing the Fine Arts Education Panel; initiating strategic planning in the arts and making it a required component of the Master Planning process; and creating a state supported grants program for improving arts education across the 24 school systems. Because of these efforts, Dr. Grasmick received the 2010 National Art Education Association's Distinguished Service Award and has been recognized by many other organizations too numerous to list here.
