@jatriggs So agreed. This man could conjure the spirits of the Romantics like no one else. My *one* small complaint is sometimes he tried to turn decidedly non-Romantic repertoire into Romantic repertoire so that he could work the same magic, and it didn't always fit. But he was in his element in works like this. And how he did it, flapping his arms like they were gelatin, was a mystery, even for the players who worked under his (imprecise but compelling) baton.

As a recording, this version of the fourth symphony has never been surpassed. This particular movement is thrillingly propulsive. Furtwangler draws playing of exceptional beauty from his orchestra. Exciting!

haven't heard many recordings for reference, just played with the hobby orchestra i am in , so at least compared to that this one is amazing! and , IMO , at all too!

Para mi es la mejor grabación de esta sinfonía, aunque sea en mono, no importa : )
This is one of the best, if not the best recording of Schumann's 4th - and certainly the most intense transition into the 4th movement that I know. If only Furtwängler had had stereo! Thanks for posting.

Much to my surprise Schumann orchestral music is proving a box office deterrent at this years promenade concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. I find pieces like this so inspired and spontaneous...the surging harmonies at 3:10
Wow!
Karajan is also good in this symphony but Furtwangler seems to find more richness and depth?
