  • Thank you for posting this. i thought it was gone forever. Ramey is the best Escamillo ever. He's a rock star, which is exactly what Escamillo should be. One reviewer said of this Ramey performance, "At last, Escamillo is no longer the dullest man in Spain"! Most singers have no idea how to perform this. It's a real showpiece when performed by Ramey!

  • I saw Carmen the other night at San Diego Opera, and once again there was another dull Escamillo. Why is Ramey the only singer who "gets" this role? Most other singers stumble through this role like they're half asleep. Singers need to think Mick Jagger when they perform thhis role...or maybe I should say they need to think Sam Ramey!

  • No, wait. How is it possible that Samuel Ramuey is so perfect in every role he plays? :DDD

  • @suzannesadiiqa It was indeed the Domingo Film. Different tastes I guess. I went around trying to find an Escamillo who was really good so that the young friend who saw the Domingo film with me would stop saying "I hate Escamillo" I tried to convince her that she just hated that particular Escamillo. I found the Ramey version for her. I'm just not a Raimondi fan.I love Ramey's Scarpia too (which I've heard live) and Milnes's and Greer Grimsley's..

  • @suzannesadiiqa I think I'd probably love it. I think of myself as more of a Monty Python fan, but so help me, Benny Hill is funny, and I don't know why. He just is! But then, I liked Pigoletto on The Muppets too...And Bugs Bunny in What's Opera, Doc.

  • @arpeggio1358 It's me again, I just remembered I saw an old Benny Hill 'take off' of Carmen the other night and fell about laughing! nothing if not catholic in my taste. You might like that as well.

  • @arpeggio1358 Was it a theatre production you saw or the film with Placido Domingo? in which I thought he was great. Maybe it's up to individual taste. Have you seen Raimondi in the film of Tosca! as Scarpia, the 'Te Deum' is rivitting..........Enjoy! regards

  • @suzannesadiiqa I'm terribly sorry, but I've seen Ramimondi in this role, and he's the dullest Escamillo ever. His 'bullfighter as religion" interpretation in the 1982 film is plodding and boring beyond belief. That baritone I mentioned who sang the role at San Diego Opera was better.

  • @arpeggio1358 Try Ruggiero Raimondi...

  • trop fort son voix !!!!!

  • Possibly THE BEST interpretation of singing moving and acting Escamillo!

Do you see this anger, warm blood and emotions...

  • Extraordinario...quisera poder cantar así
