Davinc, that statement says way more than you might rewalize about the American version of "idolatry". The good book actually says you can't serve BOTH God and Money...which lands the Jesus back with the Demoncrats more than the Repugnicans.

mowriter- That was the joke. All mass religions are a crock of shit, and there is little 'good' about the good books. Religious writings like the Bible/Koran/Torah get used as a tool for oppression rather than enlightenment.

Davinc: boy would I love to tell you you're flat wrong. Unfortunately the evidence is with you.

My commentary pre-supposes a religious American audience that thinks the Bible only sides with the Right. Not so, and in fact there's a huge alignment with the Left, regarding SOCIAL JUSTICE and other left wing concerns.

But...RELIGION certainly is a tool of power to coerce the weak minded. I advocate something much more personal, and I believe biblically accurate.

Davinc:

"If God exists, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of him"

--James Baldwin

I take this quote to heart, knowing the stakes are doing right by God...or doing away with the whole idea, entirely.

I grew up with a Bible in the house and all I remember from reading it as a kid was 'wow, this guy in the sky is really mean'. God's love manifested itself in the form of plagues, death, fire, famine, and floods. All because people refused to submit to ideological tyranny.

If biblical god exists (and it doesn't), I am fated to oppose its egomaniacal tyranny and brutality.

Davinc: understandable when read selectively as a kid. Taken as a whole, there is plenty that displays social justice, care for the poor and the foreigner, justice against evil but mercy to the innocent. They full array of human error, countered with the better way, advocated.
