I had a hard time making this video because I became very emotional. I am deeply affected by the homeless, and I wanted to do this as a start for my soon to come video project about the homeless in Fresno, California. I think it is urgent that people become aware of the severity and increasing tragedy of homeless people in the United States. I am in no way forgetting about the rest of the world, but I believe we must start by cleaning up our own "back yard". Please do anything you can to help the homeless. Never judge, never asume, never think it would never happen to you. It can happen to YOU! Just imagine you lost your job and couldn't find a new one in 2 or 3 months, and no one could help you pay ALL your bills...how would that affect you and your family? What if you were a single mom? What if you were the only provider? What if you were ILL? Entire families are homeless right now in the United States. Most of these families are headed by single moms. Abandoned moms. Many homeless persons are abused. Many are very ill. Many die. Never judge. If you see a homeless person, don't second guess them, don't look away, don't avoid eye contact. Look the person in the eye and give them a few bucks. You never know if you have just saved their day. Better yet, offer to buy them a meal, or to buy them a room for the night. And contribute by donating any resources you can. We must all do something, anything! But ignoring it won't make it go away. The homeless are human beings without the most basic of human needs, the need for shelter! For information about the homeless and how you can contribute, please visit:

oh, I am sorry it closed! that makes me very upset. the Bush admin spent most of the budget on war, and now everything is falling apart, and there is so much need, more than ever we need grants and volunteers, just today I spoke to a social worker who told me that terrible things are happening due to the economy, more people are now homeless, unemployed, and going crazy because they are burried in bills. :( I hope you find some other way to help the needy!

Some homeless people make choices, and some don't. if you are a single mother and loose your job, there's a great chance you will end up homeless. It isn't a choice. If you are mentally ill, you may not be capable of choosing either. It is wrong to judge based upon our experience only. Life isn't just black and white. I wish it were as simple as that. Compassion and love should extend to those we do not understand. :o) Merry Christmas, and may all beings be blessed.

Just a thought or two...
I think for a lot of us it's hard to see that thin line that brought these people to the edge. It's natural to want to protect what we love and have worked hard for. It's leads us to walk away from people who have lost their way.
But, perhaps love that doesn't exclude these people will keep our hearts and society on the right track. It's a monumental challenge but there's something beautiful in that place.
Homeless people made choices too. Stay strong.

kinbigbird, I understand you, but not all people can learn to fish, not all are as capable as you. that is why we need a social system that is adequate. I am a social science major, so I can tell you there are things you aren't aware of...thank you for your comments.
